DOGTOWN AND Z BOYS
On May 3rd, the Red Bank based Freedom Film Society is bringing to town the groundbreaking, feature length documentary film "Dogtown and Z Boys". Chronicling the eruption of the skateboarding phenomena on the West Coast during the mid 1970's, the film follows a gang of surfers who emerged from Dogtown, a rundown section of Santa Monica and Venice, CA. These outcasts were known as "Z-boys", named after the Zephyr Surf Shop which provided them refuge. When the waves were low, they took their skateboards to canyon playgrounds, and rode the paved hills as if they were ocean. They succeeded to not only develop a subculture that stilll remains legendary, but later helped to legitimize that art of skateboarding. Premiering at 2001 Sundance Film Festival, the film was received to immediate acclaim, snatching the 2001 Sundance Audience Award. The film will be preceded by a party at Red Bank's own Soul Sauce skate shop on 176 Monmouth Street, Red Bank NJ. Tickets are on sale at Clearview Cinemas box office for $10.
