2003 RED BANK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
October 3rd–5th

Program 16
Emerging Filmmakers Series
Highlighting the best and brightest of local highschool filmmakers, the Emerging Filmmakers Series class of 2003 is bound to be among the next generation of great American film directors.

2003 has brought many new and exciting changes to the Freedom Film Society and RBIFF, but perhaps none so satisfying as the onset of the Emerging Filmmakers Series. The program was created to encourage high school students to pick up a camera and explore the art of filmmaking. Through the participation of local high schools, students first created their films, then organized film screenings at their schools, which were attended by an FFS judging panel. One film from each school was choosen for screening at RBIFF 2003.

Program 17
Cremaster

Cremaster IV & V – (Mature)
USA 97min
Matthew Barney

The ultimate avant garde film of our time, Matthew Barney's The Cremaster Cycle is an exploration of sexual differentiation that combines lush imagery with elaborate mythology through multiple genres. The end result is an awe inspiring film achievement of unsurpassed texture and complexity. Following a major exhibit of the work at the Guggenheim Museum, RBIFF presents the final two films of the cycle.

Program 18
Manhood
Manhood
USA 84min
Bobby Roth

Manhood is a dark comedy-drama that explores masculinity, with an original score by Christopher Franke, songs performed by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa. Jack (Nestor Carbonell) is a reformed womanizer and single father. When his sister Jill (Janeane Garofalo) turns up distraught, on the brink of separation from her deadbeat husband Eli (John Ritter), Jack agrees to take her son Charlie for a month. The formerly incorrigible Jack now must set a good example for two teenage boys. In accepting responsibility for his son and nephew, he discovers a depth of emotion that years of skirt chasing did not provide. This stylish black comedy peopled by oddball characters – a violent rug salesman, a dominatrix, and the flotsam and jetsam of Los Angeles posing for headshots – is a brilliant look at the intersection of sex, love, and family and how they shape a man's life.
Program 19
Jersey Fresh – (Mature)
The most popular segement of RBIFF 2001 and 2002, Jersey Fresh is back and packing the freshest punch yet.

Flesh Wounds
USA 25min
Phil Nobile Jr.

Set against the backdrop of a run-down Jersey shore town, Flesh Wounds follows three people through the course of one long night, as they discover that while life may imitate art, it doesn't always do a good job. A simple revenge story on the surface, the film takes a sideways glance at the reality people create, the traps into which they fall, and the roles in which they (mis)cast themselves.

Sister Windy
USA 5min
Bob Mataranglo

An animated parody of the BBC series "Sister Wendy." An intrepid nun travels the world finding great art to present and explain to her viewers. In a humorous, tongue-in-cheek manner, this video explores issues of nudity and sexuality in fine arts, religion, and politics. Art history as you've never seen it before.

Charles Valenza and David Caras

An insurance actuary finds nearly half a million dollars stashed in his basement and, after careful consideration, he decides to keep the apparently illicit cash and risk the consequences...
